Children's Rehabilitation

Our Children's Rehabilitation program, offered at our main facility in Aiken, South Carolina, provides individualized occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy services to children with special needs through the use of an interdisciplinary team of pediatric experienced professionals.

Occupational Therapy combines the understanding of sensory systems, posture, and movement to help a child become independent in self care skills, play skills, fine motor skills, and visual perceptual motor skills. The therapist structures both the task and the environment to allow the child to practice these skills and solve any problems the child may encounter within the task.

Physical Therapy promotes achievement of developmental gross motor milestones or to return a child to their prior level of function following an injury. PT addresses the ability to walk (with and without assistive equipment), ability to propel a wheelchair, strength, range of motion, development of gross motor skills, balance and coordination.

Speech Therapy increases a child’s communication skills through observation and measurement of a child’s speech and language ability, addresses delays in communication skills including articulation (pronunciation of words), language (expression and understanding), fluency (stuttering), oral motor difficulties (feeding and swallowing), and hearing impairments.

Aquatic Therapy utilizes the properties of water to expand the possibilities for individuals who may have weight bearing, sensory or mobility restrictions. Water adds buoyancy to the body thus eliminating excess stress on the joints. This service is provided by either our Physical or Occupational Therapist depending on your child’s needs.

A Team Approach for You and your child

Our team is dedicated to leading and supporting your child to advance to his highest level of independent function. Your partners in Pediatrics consist of many people who care about your child’s well being. In coordination with your Pediatrician, our Occupational, Physical and/or Speech Therapists will help your child reach their fullest potential in a pleasant, caring, and kid friendly atmosphere. A treatment plan is designed especially for your child, so we can meet the goals that are appropriate for you and your child. Your plan may include individual or group therapy with the following treatment activities; gait training, strengthening exercises, modalities self care training, sensory integration, visual perceptual skill activities, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, oral motor activities, dysphagia treatment, vocabulary development, articulation (speech sound production), language development, fluency training, hearing impairment training, sign language, or augmentative communication training. We also collaborate with other agencies involved with your child such as his teacher, Baby Net, or other professionals for specialized equipment needs.

Hitchcock Healthcare is here to direct, support and encourage you and your family. Therapy is not something we do to your child, but rather we do together with your child. It is active and requires you and your child’s participation from goal setting through the completion of the treatment plan and beyond.
